Live ยท VS Code extension
FileScope
File properties without leaving VS Code: permissions, ownership, size and timestamps in the status bar, the full stat output in a panel.
What it is
FileScope keeps the properties you care about in the VS Code status bar and puts everything the file system knows one click away.
Most file-properties extensions stop at size and modification time. FileScope answers the questions that come up on a server: who owns this file, when was it created, what are the permissions exactly, and does any of that survive over a remote connection. It does, because the extension runs on the side that holds the file.
Install it with one command:
code --install-extension banochkin.filescopeWorking on a remote host? Install it on the remote side, the Extensions view offers that directly. A copy installed only locally has nothing to show, because only the machine that holds the file knows its properties.
Features
- Status barPick which properties to show and in what order: permissions, owner, group, size, any of the four timestamps.
- Real ownersOwner and group come back as names, not bare uid and gid, resolved through the system account database.
- Exact permissionsSymbolic and octal side by side, with setuid, setgid and sticky bits rendered the way ls -l writes them.
- Works remotelyRuns where the files are: Remote-SSH, WSL, Dev Containers and Codespaces report the remote file system.
- Details panelEverything stat knows: inode, device, hard links, blocks, symlink targets, creation time where the file system records one.
- Stays currentAfter a save, a chmod from the terminal or a rebase that touches the file, the display refreshes on its own.
Who it's for
- Developers who deploy over SSH and need to know who owns a file before touching it
- Anyone debugging permission errors without leaving the editor
- People who want stat output in a readable panel instead of a terminal tab
